This is the smallest of the parks in Tanzania’s national parks.The park is famous for chimpanzees thanks to Jane Goodall’s research program.
Other animal features here include colobus monkeys, olive baboons. There are over 200 different bird species ranging from the iconic fish eagle to the jewel-like Peter’s twinspots that hop tamely around the visitors’ centre. ke like a sprawling city.
About Gombe Stream National Park
Size: 52 sq km (20 sq miles), Tanzania’s smallest park.
Location: 16 km (10 miles) north of Kigoma on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania.
How to get there
There are scheduled flight to Kigoma from Dar and Arusha. From Kigoma, local lake-taxis take up to three hours to reach Gombe, or motorboats can be chartered, taking less than one hour.
Chimpanzee trekking; hiking, swimming and snorkelling;
visit the site of Henry Stanley’s famous “Dr Livingstone I presume” at Ujiji near Kigoma, and watch the renowned dhow builders at work. .
Best time to visit
February-June, November-mid December. This is a wet season and the chimps don’t go far so easier to spot.
